Greenwich HS Boys Rout McMahon; Girls Lose in OT

After somewhat of a slow start, the boys basketball team rolled to another victory Tuesday, routing McMahon 72-53 at home.

Greg Donlic scored 23 points for the Cardinals, who won their fifth straight game to improve to 7-1. After winning just four games last season, Greenwich is now only one victory away from clinching a berth in the state tournament.

McMahon, which was coming off its first win of the season, 53-51 over New Canaan, battled the Cardinals to 13-13 tie after the first quarter. But the Cardinals took command with a 16-0 spurt in the second quarter that staked them to a 39-25 lead at the half.

Alejandro Rodriguez added 14 points for Greenwich, which included four 3-pointers. C.J. Byrd contributed 13 points, giving the Cardinals three double-figure scorers.

Darkym Stroud and Kyle Jordan each had 12 points for the Senators, who dropped to 1-7.

While the Greenwich boys keep winning, the Greenwich girls dropped a heartbreaker  Tuesday, falling to McMahon 40-38 in overtime for their ninth consecutive loss.

McMahon freshman guard Kayla Croswell hit a layup with three seconds remaining to snap a 38-38 tie. The Senators ended a six-game losing streak, improving to 3-7.

Caroline Barrett scored 10 points to lead Greenwich, which dropped to 1-9.

Rebecca Kural added eight points for the Cardinals, who tied the game at 38-38 on a pair of free throws by Rebecca DeCarlo with 30 seconds left in overtime.

Kyle Courtney scored nine points and Kayla Croswell added eight for the Senators. The contest was tied 34-34 entering the extra period.
