Greenwich HS Track Takes 3rd in FCIAC West Championship

The boys and girls track teams each finished third at the FCIAC Western Division championships on Saturday at Staples High School. Staples won the boys title while Danbury took the girls crown.
In the boys' competition, Greenwich's Robert Gelcius won the shot put (43-7) and Ryan Kelly (36.68) finished first in the 300 meters ( 36.68) and third in the 600 meters (1:27.22).

In addition, Marcus Motill placed second in the 300 (37.18) and second in the 600 (1:25.82).
Another highlight for the Cardinals was the performance of their 4x240 meter relay team, which broke the school record with a time of 1:56.49.

The team, comprised Motill and Ryan Kelly, Elijah Dume and Nick Pulitano, posted a time that ranks in the top 20 nationally. The quartet also finished first at the Yale Invitational last week.
In the girls competition, Greenwich won the 4x400 relay and 1,600 sprint medley while Abby Markowitz finished first in the 1,000 meters (3:08.33) and 3,200 meters (11:51.52). Elizabeth Markowitz took first in the 600 meters(1:40.51).
Other top performers included Jenny Goggin, who was second in the 1,000 meters (3:12.99) and third in the 1,600 (5:43.43), and Claire D'Etiveaud, who finished third in the high jump (4-8).

Trumbull's Matt Klein won a 15-kilometer road race in Ridgefield on Sunday, posting a winning time of 50.39 over the 9.3-mile course to capture the second leg of the Boston Buildup series.
Klein, 17, topped the 322 runners who completed the race and leads the overall standings.
Cos Cob's Anja Krieger-Redwood won the women’s division for the second straight race with a time of 58.48.
The four-race series continues with a 20K race set for Feb. 12 in Southport.
Klein finished more than a minute ahead of runner-up Will McDonough of New Canaan, who crossed the finish line in 51.56.
Completing the top five were Ansonia's Tom Milenkevich (51:57), Danbury’s Joe LeMay (54.57) and Rowayton’s Gus Ellison (55.42).
Among the female finishers, Darien's Liz Herbert was fourth (1:00.8) and Wilton’s Mary Zengo fifth (1:00.29).
Klein leads the men’s division with Milenkevich and McDonough ranking second and third, respectively. In the women's division, Redwood leads after two races.

The Westhill boys basketball team handed Greenwich its second straight loss - and first at home this season -- with a 61-43 victory on Friday night.
Chris Waters scored 21 points for the Vikings, who took over first place in the FCIAC West. Westhill improved to 8-3 in the FCIAC and 9-4 overall.
Greenwich, which was coming off a 61-45 defeat at Bridgeport Central, dropped to 7-4 and 9-4.
The Vikings, who have been playing like a playoff team, began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 16-8 to take a 27-17 halftime lead.
Westhill extended its advantage to 42-28 after three periods.
Samuel Dorissiant scored 11 points and Tony Dobbinson added 10 for the Vikings, who have won four in a row but still have to play Danbury, St. Joseph and Trinity Catholic.
Greg Donlic scored 18 points and Alex McMurray added 11 for the Cardinalls, who are off until Feb. 3 when they visit Trumbull. Greenwich dropped to 6-1 at home this season.

Megan D'Allessandro scored 14 points Friday as the Westhill girls basketball team posted a 54-37 win over Greenwich.
Stephanie Roones added 13 for the Vikings, who improved to 9-5 overall and 8-4 in the FCIAC, but the victory was not as easy as the final score indicated.
Westhill only led 30-25 late in the second quarter before the Vikings used a 20-0 run to put away the contest.
Jenny Cespedes scored eight points to lead the Cardinals (3-12, 3-10), who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Greenwich's leading scorer Caroline Barnett, who averages 14 points, missed her fourth straight game due to a concussion.
