Greenwich Library Teen Programs: Teen Depression, Book Club, Friday Night Chess

Check it out — There are plenty of great activities for teens planned by the Greenwich Library.

This month, parents of teens can learn how to spot depression and help their kids through treatment. Student gamers will enjoy a massive League of Legends Tournament Viewing Party and movie buffs can scream along to the slasher classic You’re Next. The library also offers a slew of regularly scheduled student programs including the Student Leadership Council, Friday Night Chess and Middle School Book Club, all of which meet monthly. All events are open to all at no charge unless otherwise noted.

Monday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m., Understanding Teen Depression
Local psychotherapist Glenn Wolff, LCSW will lead an interactive workshop for parents and guardians of teens. Topics covered include the signs and symptoms of teen depression, how to talk to a depressed teen and how to support them through treatment. Wolff specializes in the treatment of children, teens and families. He maintains a private practice in Stamford, CT. Space is limited to 20 participants. Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m., Student Leadership Council Meeting
Students in grades 7-12 gather at Teen Central on the second floor to brainstorm about using library resources to initiate and execute projects relevant to their peer group in exchange for community service hours. Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m., Friday Night Chess
National Master Rich Jackson will provide instruction, supervised play and an occasional challenge match. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring a love of the game or a desire to learn. No registration required. For more information contact Margaret Walsh at mwalsh@greenwichlibrary.org.

Sunday, October 19 from 1:30 – 5 p.m., League of Legends Championship Tournament Viewing
Greenwich Library Student Leaders will host a viewing party for the League of Legends World Championship Finals on October 19. Come root for your favorite team as they either become the Season Four World Champion or fall just short of the glorious title! There will be a large projection of the broadcast. Feel free to bring your own laptop, but it isn’t necessary. Refreshments will be served. Thursday, October 23 at 4:30 p.m., Middle School Book Club
Middle School Book Club is for literature fans in grades 6-8. This month’s book is the Greenwich Reads Together companion book Outcasts United adapted for young people by Warren St. John. Outcasts United shares the inspirational story of a youth soccer team comprised of refugees from around the world who, under the guidance of a formidable female coach, helped to transform their Georgia community. Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m., Pumpkin Carving for Grades 6 and up
Carve a classic jack-o-lantern or create your own design at this fun pumpkin carving in the 2nd floor Meeting Room. Refreshments will be served. Bring your imagination!
