GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department continues to be involved in various training programs in order to improve the services they provide to the residents of Greenwich.

One of the most recent training strategies the department has been following for the past few years is a program established by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) called "Integrating Communications and Tactics", or ICAT.

According to a recent post from the GPD on Facebook and the PERF ICAT training guide, "ICAT is a training program that provides first responding police officers with the tools, skills, and options they need to successfully and safely defuse a range of critical incidents. Developed by PERF with input from hundreds of police professionals from across the United States, ICAT takes the essential building blocks of critical thinking, crisis intervention, communications, and tactics, and puts them together in an integrated approach to training."

The GPD said that ICAT is designed especially for situations involving people who are unarmed or are armed with weapons other than guns, and who may be experiencing mental health or other crises.

GPD officers Max Rinaldi and Chris Wallace recently attended a class in Maine on ICAT. The two will be the department's in-house trainers for the program.
