Greenwich Police Mourn Loss Of Retired Lieutenant

Edward Duff worked in the Greenwich Police Department for 24 years, retiring as a lieutenant in 1977. He died last week, the GPD said.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is mourning the loss of retired Lt. Edward Joseph Duff who died on Dec. 8. Duff was 94.

Duff began his 24-year career with the GPD on July 1, 1953. In a Facebook post, Heavey said after Duff was hired, he was appointed patrolman and was assigned to the Patrol and Traffic Divisions.

On Jan. 17, 1965, Duff was appointed as a detective, and worked in that role for over five years. On Aug. 10, 1970, he was promoted to sergeant in the Patrol Division and to lieutenant on March 19, 1972.

Duff's personnel file "reflects excellent investigative work over the years" the GPD said. Letters from citizens and official commendations cite his many services to Greenwich in working on burglaries, larcenies, auto thefts, assaults and robberies.

In a special Police Commission commendation, Duff was cited "for his participation in the capture of a criminal wanted for a holdup in Greenwich. His courage is in keeping with the tradition of law enforcement, and reflects great honor on his department and himself."

Duff was born in Greenwich on July 2, 1927. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from 1950-1952 with the Military Police in Korea and Japan.

While in the Army, Duff was selected for Officers Candidate School. Prior to his Army service, Duff also served as a seaman in the U.S. Merchant Marines for two years.

Duff's two sons both served as Greenwich police officers, Heavey noted.

"We join all members of the Department in extending our sincere sympathy to the Duff family," police said.

A celebration of life for Duff will be held at a later date.
