Greenwich Prepares For Tropical Storm Henri

Tropical Storm Henri is expected to arrive in Connecticut late Saturday.

GREENWICH, CT — With Tropical Storm Henri running up the East Coast, the Town of Greenwich is preparing for possible impacts.

The storm is expected to arrive in Connecticut sometime late Saturday, but it's too early to tell where it will make landfall or whether the storm will be strong enough to reach hurricane status.

"I want to assure you that the Town and our team of first-responders are ready to respond to any situation that may arise from this weather event," said First Selectman Fred Camillo in his weekly email to residents on Friday. "Our emergency management team continues to monitor the situation and have initiated partial activation of our Emergency Operations Center."

Camillo urged residents to prepare for the storm which is expected to bring tropical force winds and gusts up to 40 mph, along with two to four inches of rain. Camillo noted that marine conditions are expected to deteriorate with heavy surf, high tides and rip currents that will be made worse by a full moon on Sunday.

  • Businesses that offer outdoor dining should ensure that all tables, chairs, tents and umbrellas are brought indoors.
  • Boaters should also check their vessels to ensure they are properly secured for the storm.
  • Residents should secure outdoor furniture, and have a supply of non-perishable food, water, first aid, flashlights, batteries, and prescriptions.

The Town of Greenwich will post updates as needed via the town website, the reverse 911 system, and Camillo's newsletters.

"On behalf of all of our first-responders, I thank you in advance for your cooperation during this weather event," Camillo said.

Given the weather forecast the Coastal Cleanup scheduled for the Cos Cob Marina at 9 a.m. Saturday will be held as scheduled. Participants who want to kayak are advised to participate on the upper Mianus River or along the inner harbor shoreline to avoid possible rip currents on Long Island Sound. Land-borne participants can proceed as planned.
