Greenwich Reinstates Mask Mandate For Town Hall, Government Sites

Masks are now required in all Greenwich government facilities, regardless of vaccination status, according to First Selectman Fred Camillo.

GREENWICH, CT — Effective Thursday, masks will be required in Town Hall and all Greenwich government facilities in response to the recent rise in coronavirus cases in town, First Selectman Fred Camillo announced.

The mandate will take effect at 8 a.m. and will be for visitors and employees alike; additionally, 6 feet of social distancing also is required.

"With the increasing number of cases in Town, it is out of an abundance of caution, in the
interest of public health and safety, that we are imposing this temporary requirement," Camillo said in a statement.

The town lifted its mask mandate in Town Hall in early November, but the continuation of the delta variant and the introduction of the omicron variant has changed the situation.

On Tuesday, Greenwich Public Schools reported 96 new cases with 171 active cases throughout the district, according to Camillo, and Greenwich Hospital reported there were 17 patients being treated for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

The Greenwich Health Department also reported that as of Tuesday, there have been 507 new cases reported among Greenwich residents over the past week. On Monday, there were 263 new cases and 105 additional cases reported on Tuesday.

With the social distancing requirements, Town meetings will revert to the virtual settings via
Zoom for all meetings, until further notice, according to Camillo.

"To take the lead, I have decided that the December 23 Board of Selectmen meeting will now be held via Zoom only.

"In addition to the masks being required in our Town public buildings, I strongly encourage that
in order to be safe in confined settings in private buildings, that people wear masks. If you’re
outdoors and not in a confined setting, I recommend you to use your best judgment," Camillo said.

He concluded, "I thank our residents who have been vigilant about wearing masks and getting the vaccines, especially as we approach the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. If you are vaccinated and have received a booster, I encourage residents to support our local businesses and patronize them by doing their holiday shopping here in Town."
