GREENWICH, CT — An Oklahoma City, Okla. man who police say tried to retrieve money from a Greenwich resident as part of a larger scam was arrested in town on Monday.

Qijin Wang, 38, was arrested on May 12 and charged with criminal attempt at second-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny, and interfering with an officer/resisting, his arrest report said.

Police said in an announcement that an investigation revealed that scammers, posing as federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and Office of Inspector General, targeted a local physician and accused him of drug trafficking, police said, noting the scammers demanded large sums of money under threats of arrest, prosecution and harm to the victim's reputation.

In April 2025, the victim was coerced into handing over $15,000 in cash to a courier, believing they were complying with federal instructions, police said. As the suspects continued to demand more money, the victim contacted legal counsel, who then alerted police.

In coordination with the DEA, Greenwich Police set up a controlled operation for a second fake money drop.

On May 12, a male courier arrived at a predetermined meeting location to collect what he believed to be $17,000 in cash, police said. Officers moved in to arrest the suspect, later identified as Wang, who attempted to flee but was taken into custody.

Investigators believe the scam is connected to an organized criminal network operating out of overseas call centers with domestic couriers, police said.

"The Greenwich Police Department encourages the public—especially healthcare professionals—to be alert for fraudulent calls from individuals posing as federal agents and to report any such activity immediately," police added.

Wang was unable to post a $1 million bond. He's scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on May 28.
