GREENWICH, CT — The suspect in a Greenwich jewelry store robbery last month is also accused of being involved in a robbery 10 days later at a Stamford jewelry store, where the owner was shot and killed, police said.

Greenwich police said Thursday officers conducted an investigation following a March 18 robbery at Byram Jewelers on Mill Street.

The investigation included "an extensive crime scene search, a canvass for witnesses and a review of area security camera evidence," police said. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Greenwich police Lt. Mark Zuccerella said a handgun was shown during the robbery and used to smash a glass case. The suspect was described by police as a tall man wearing a Fedora-style hat, a surgical mask, a black sweater and jeans. He was also carrying a yellow shopping bag.

Working with law enforcement agencies in New York, including Yonkers and New Rochelle police, Greenwich detectives identified a possible suspect in the robbery, as well as a related vehicle theft, police said.

"It was determined that this suspect was in violation of his parole and, with the assistance of the FBI and New York parole authorities, the suspect was taken into custody in New York after a tactical raid involving a FBI SWAT team and Greenwich Police," Greenwich police said in a statement.

The identity of the suspect, who remains in custody in New York on a parole violation, is being withheld "pending the completion of a Connecticut arrest warrant," Greenwich police said.

While working with other police departments, officers determined the suspected robber was also accused of being involved in a robbery at Marco Jewelers in Stamford on March 28, during which the store's owner, Mark Vuono, was shot and killed.

The FBI announced Thursday they will be federally charging three suspects in the Stamford robbery, including the suspect in the Byram Jewelers robbery, Greenwich police said.

"Mutual efforts by several police agencies resulted in all of the suspects being taken into custody and bringing justice to the victims of these crimes," Greenwich police Captain Robert Berry said in a statement. "We hope that these efforts provide some solace to the victims, and we want to assure the public that we will aggressively pursue any criminal who targets our community."

Vuono, 69, owned the store along with his wife, Ana Maria Vuono, according to his obituary. He leaves behind two sons. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
