The New York Islanders have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Greenwich native Sean Backman.

Backman, 25, scored 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 67 games with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League during his first professional season last year. He also added four points (two goals, two assists) in five games with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

Backman played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Yale University, earning ECAC co-rookie of the year honors as a freshman and captaining the Bulldogs during his senior year in 2009-10. Backman totaled 126 points (77 goals, 49 assists) in 122 career games at Yale.

Prior to attending Yale, he played for the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League, scoring 56 points (29 goals, 27 assists) in 57 games.

The host Tamarack Country Club of Greenwich piled up 1,020 points Saturday to win the Division 5 championship in the Fairfield County Swim League.

Tamarack finished well ahead of runnerup Silver Spring and third-place Weston Field Club. It won the girls' competition with 619 points.

Anna Ekholm was a three-time winner in the under-12 division (50-meter 50-meter butterfly, 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley while Kris Bittel also won three events in the boys U-17 bracket (50 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 100 IM).

Two-time winners were Maddie Haley in the 8-year-old division (25 butterfly and 25 backstroke), Kelsey Bittel in the14-and-under 50 butterfly and 100 IM, and Charlotte Pohl in the 12-and-under 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Other winners included Tyler Harkness in the boys’ 14-and-under 50 butterfly, Julia Ekholm in the 10-and-under 25 breaststroke and Phoebe Pohl in the 17-and-under 100 freestyle.

Greenwich's Daniel Balin will be in the second group of the day on Thursday when the PGA championship gets under way at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA.

Balin tees off at 7:40 p.m. in a threesome that includes Argentina's Andres Romero and South Carolina's Tommy Gainey. On Friday, Ballin starts at 12:50 p.m. from the 10th tee.

This marks the second straight year that Balin has qualified for the PGA, the year's final major. He did not make the cut last year.

Individual tickets are on sale for the 2011 Constellation Energy Senior Players Golf Championship set for Aug. 17-21 at Westchester CC in Harrison, NY.

A single-day grounds ticket will only $20 plus tax and fees. The ticket is valid for grounds admission on any one day.

A weekly clubhouse-access ticket is also available for $125 plus tax and fees and offers admission to the grounds and to the clubhouse every day during the competition rounds, Aug. 18-21.
