Greenwich's Danny Balin got off to a disastrous start and shot an 11-over par 81 Thursday in the first round of the PGA championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.

Balin's score was the fourth-highest of the day, leaving him with virtually no chance to make the cut. He missed the cut last year when he also qualified for the PGA championship.

Balin, the 29-year assistant professional at Burning Tree, played the first four holes in a 6-over with a bogey on the first, double bogey on the second and a triple-bogey on the par-3 fourth hole.

"Yeah, just missed middle of the fairway on the first hole, put it in the  bunker, gave myself a chance for par and missed," Balin said in an interview with the PGA. "I shanked a 6-iron on the fourth hole into the water and then three-putted for 6, and when you're coming from that far behind, it's tough."

He settled down, but couldn't make up any ground, parring the next five holes to make the turn at 41.

Balin bogeyed No. 10, then made his only birdie of the day on No. 13.

But more trouble ensued as he bogied No. 14, doubled-bogeyed No. 15 and bogeyed No.16.  Balin parred No. 17, but bogeyed the final hole to complete his 81.

Balin is aware that his chances of making the cut are slim, but he is certainly looking for a better showing on Friday.

"Just go out there and have fun," he said. "I don't know if I can shoot 59 to maybe make the cut on the number or maybe 60. I'll do my best, but just at least hit it the way that I know how to hit it and play the way I know how to play and give myself as many chances as possible and just enjoy the day with all my  family and friends and just the crowds being out here in a major."

Steve Stricker grabbed the first-round lead, shooting a 7-under 63, which equaled the all-time lowest single-round score in any major championship.

Greenwich's Theo Humphrey has advanced to the semifinals of the 43rd annual MetLife Boys Championship at the Rumson Country Club in Rumson, N.J.

The 15-year-old Humphrey routed James Wolfangel of Flemington, N.J., 7 and 6 in the first round Thursday, then ousted Christopher Terry, also of Greenwich, 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals.

Humphrey will meet Jeremy Wall of Brielle, N.J.,in the semifinals on Friday morning. The finals are set for Friday afternoon.

In the other semifinal, Kyle Brey of Farmingdale, N.Y., takes on  Christopher Gabriele of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.
