Greenwich Coach Makes Winning Debut

The Greenwich girls basketball team gave new coach Chrys Hernandez a thrilling victory in her debut on Wednesday.

Caroline Barrett scored 17 points and Jenny Cespedes added 10 as the Cardinals edged Fairfield Warde 49-47 in overtime in the season opener for both teams.

Greenwich, which is looking improve upon last year's 5-15 finish, grabbed a 22-18 lead at the half.

Warde, which is expected to challenge for an FCIAC playoff spot, went back ahead 32-28 lead after the third quarter behind Kenzie Burns, who scored 11 points.

But Barrett scored nine points in the fourth quarter to force the extra period and Tony Carr hit the winning basket for the Cardinals in the final minute of overtime.

Hannah Jeffrey scored four goals and Ciel McDermid added three as the Greenwich girls hockey team opened its season with a 13-1 victory over the Stamford/Westhill Co-op team

Erin Ferguson, Meghan Spezzano, Skylar Jayes, Sara Schectman, Madeline Graves, Randi Schmaling each scored once for the Cardinals, who have every player back from last year's team that missed qualifying for the FCIAC playoffs for the first time since 2004.  

Jess Blasznik scored the lone goal for Stamford-Westhill, which is in its first season competing on the varsity level.

Sara Ehrlich, who figures to be busy all season, made 37 saves for Stamford-Westhill.
