Greenwich Girls Indoor Track Wins First FCIAC Title Since 1980

Led by Abby Markowitz, who was a three-time winner, the girls indoor track team won the FCIAC championship on Thursday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Markowitz dominated the long-distance events, winning the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200 meters to give the Cardinals their first FCIAC team title since 1980.

Greenwich posted a team total of 92 points, 30 better than runner-up Darien, while Danbury finished third with 40 points.

In the 1,000, Markowitz recorded a winning time of 3:00.36, holding off runner-up Grace Loh of Darien by just over a second (3:01.78).

In the 1,600, Markowitz (5:19.71) edged Fairfield Warde's Cate Allen (5:20.6) by a mere three-tenths of a second. And in the 3,200, Markowitz's winning time of 11:35.65 was almost three seconds better than runner-up Stephanie Benko of New Canaan.

Amanda Michaud also gave Greenwich a victory in the 300-meter dash (42.77) while Greenwich also won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays and 1,600 sprint relay.

In the boys competition, Greenwich's foursome of Marcus Motill, Elijah Dume, Nick Pulitano and Ryan Kelly captured the 4x200 relay with a school-record time of 1:32.24. The team is ranked among the top 20 in the country.

Motill and Kelly then finished first and second in the 600 meters. Motill's winning time of 1:23.28 was less than a tenth of a second faster than his teammate. The Greenwich boys finished third overall behind Staples and Danbury.

The Wreckers won their first FCIAC indoor track title since 2006, ending Danbury's five-year reign as league champions.

Goaltender Vinny Scorese recorded 20 saves Thursday as the Greenwich boys hockey team blanked Rye Country Day 1-0 at the Dorothy Hamill Rink.

Reed Brady scored the game's only goal in the second period nd Scorese made it hold up for his first shutout of the  season.

Greenwich improved to 3-11.

The Greenwich boys basketball team looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Friday when the Cardinals visit Trumbull in a 7 p.m. start.

Greenwich has been off since suffering a 61-43 loss to Westhill last Friday, which followed a 61-45 defeat to Westhill. The two defeats have dropped the Cardinals (9-4, 7-4) out of first place in the FCIAC West.

Greenwich will try get back on track against a Trumbull team that has dropped three of four and is coming off Tuesday's 77-40 drubbing to Bassick.

The Eagles (6-7, 5-6) are in last place in the competitive FCIAC West and need two wins to clinch a berth in the state tournament.

Following Friday's game, Greenwich hosts New Canaan on Tuesday before entertaining Bassick on Feb. 10.

The Greenwich (3-12, 3-10) girls host defending FCIAC champion Trumbull (13-2, 11-2) at 7 p.m. The Eagles are coming off a 71-11 thrashing of Bassick, a game in which they outscored the winless Lions 32-0 in the second half.

The deadline for the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship is Monday, Feb. 6.

The scholarship is open to Connecticut high school seniors who aspire to careers in sports journalism. Named for the longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who passed away in 2003, the award provides the winner $1,000 for freshman-year college study and a chance to receive increased aid in succeeding years by meeting certain standards.

The Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation announces that the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center is registering children in grades one through four for a basketball clinic during the s break winter recess Feb. 13-17.

The session for boys and girls will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day.  Participants will be split up according to ability and age, and taught basketball fundamentals and skills.

The program will be under the direction of John Czarnecki, who has coached basketball at GHS, the Greenwich Flames, and the boys and girls travel teams. He currently is working with many high school and travel players in the area to improve their basketball skills.

Space is limited, sign up early. The cost for the five-day program is $225.

The recreation department also annouces that registration for Coed T-Ball will begin by mail only.

There are two separate T-Ball programs.  Five-year-old T-Ball is for children that will turn 5 by April 30. This program will use the T for hitting through out the program.

Six-year-old T-Ball is for children who will turn 6 by April 30. This program will be a combination of coach pitch, and use of the T.   Children turning 7-years old by April 30 are not eligible. Please see the Parks and Recreation Small Fry program for information for those children. 

The program will meet on Saturday from April 28 through June 9 at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center Field.  Each Saturday afternoon there will be a practice and a three-inning game.  The cost of the program is $87 and includes a team shirt and hat.
