Riverside's , who is the leading goal scorer for the Springfield Falcons, has been picked to play in the American Hockey League’s All-Star Classic on Jan. 30 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
The 22-year-old Atkinson has scored 15 goals in 30 games with Springfield and also leads the Falcons in power-play goals with eight. Among AHL rookies, he ranks sixth in scoring with 25 points.
Atkinson, a sixth-round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2008, first joined the Falcons last March after completing his third season at Boston College.
As a collegian, he had a 30-goal season in 2009-10, when BC won the NCAA Division I championship. He earned the team’s MVP award that season. In 2010-11, he had 31 goals and became a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to the nation’s top college player.
Atkinson played five games with the Falcons last March/April. This season, he made the Columbus roster out of training camp and went on to score his first NHL goal on Oct. 10. He was sent to the Falcons on Oct. 12.

The Greenwich boys basketball team will have little time to savor Tuesday's stunning 43-41 victory over seventh-ranked Trinity Catholic.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday when they host Wilton in a 7 p.m. start. This is the only FCIAC boys basketball game on the slate as everyone else will play on the usual Friday, although there are three girls congests scheduled for Thursday, including Greenwich at Wilton (7 p.m.)

On Tuesday, junior Alex McMurray hit a jumper at the buzzer, giving the Cardinals a victory that surely raised some eyebrows throughout the FCIAC.
The win over the defending Class M state champion Crusaders improved the Cardinals to 5-1 and may have established them as legitimate FCIAC playoff contenders.
The health of Greenwich's 6-foot-10 center Sem Kroon could be an issue, however. Kroon left Tuesday's game with an ankle injury in the third quarter and did not return.
Wilton enters the contest at 2-3 after suffering a 62-41 loss at undefeated Ridgefield on Tuesday night.
