It's status quo for the Greenwich baseball team as the unyielding rain washed out Wednesday's entire FCIAC baseball and softball slate.

Due to scheduling conflicts because of three straight days of postponements in some cases, the Cardinals won't play against until Friday when they host Staples. Greenwich concludes its regular season on Saturday at Wilton in what could be a winner-take-all game.

The Cardinals are fortunate in that they only have two games left while others still have to play three.

However, Greenwich (9-7) is in ninth place in the FCIAC standings, one-half game behind eighth-place Wilton (9-6), which plays at Ridgefield on Thursday and hosts Trinity Catholic on Friday before facing Greenwich on Saturday.

The Cardinals theorectically could catch New Canaan (10-5) and Norwalk (10-6). However, the Bears will be guaranteed to finish ahead of Greenwich with a win over Bridgeport Central on Friday since they hold the tiebreaker edge.

Also, the Cardinals won't be able to catch New Canaan if the Rams win two of their remaining three games against Trumbull, Westhill and McMahon.

Still, Greenwich does control its own destiny and will be assured of finishing ahead of Wilton with two wins (due to a tiebreaker edge based on a head-to-head victory). First, of course, the Cardinals have to beat powerful Staples on Friday.
