GHS Field Hockey Headed for State Semifinals

In a rare occurance, the Greenwich High School field hockey team did not qualify for the FCIAC playoffs. The Cardinals are making up for it in the state tournament.
Elizabeth Stillman scored the winning goal with just under two minutes remaining Monday as the 20th-seeded Cardinals upset No. 5 Hamen 2-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Class L state tournament.

Greenwich will take on top seed Cheshire in the semifinals on Wednesday at Fairfield Ludlowe at 4 p.m.
Emily Brash gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Green Dragons tied it on a goal by Melanie Worsencroft-Marshall just 30 seconds into the second half.

Greenwich will be looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to Cheshire in October. The Rams reached the semifinals with a 1-0 win over No. 9 seed Staples on Monday.

The Pomperaug boys soccer team showed why it was ranked first in the state for most of the season.
Taylor Ellsworth scored twice in the first half for the top-seeded Panthers, who defeated No. 17 Greenwich 5-2 Monday in the second round of the Class LL state tournament.
Pomperaug (18-1-1) put away the contest early in the second half as Marc
Almeida, Richard Pitman and Nicholas Lasewicz scored in the first 14 minutes to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Panthers, who were undefeated until losing to Bunnell in the SWC final, will host No. 9 Fairfield Prep in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Jesuits advanced with a 1-0 win over No. 8 Newtown on penalty kicks.
Peter Zenner and Erik Thakor scored for the Cardinals, who concluded their season at 10-6-3.
