The Greenwich field hockey team's goal of a fourth state championship since 2005 ended Wednesday as the Cardinals dropped a 2-0 decision to top seed Cheshire in the Class L semifinals at Fairfield Ludlowe.
The Cardinals concluded their season at 7-7-3-2. After missing the FCIAC playoffs, Greenwich upset No. 4 Conard (1-0) and No. 5 Hamden (2-1) in the state tournament.

The Cardinals also needed to win a qualifying contest. The three games they won in the state was one less than they had won during the entire regular season.
Emma Farrel and Miranda Garcia scored in each half for the Rams, who improved to 18-1-1-0 and will take on Norwalk in the state finals on Saturday at Wethersfield.

The third-seeded Bears advanced to the final Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 2 Glastonbury.
Farrel opened the scoring Wednesday just over a minute into the game. Greenwich had its chances, but could solve Cheshire goalkeeper Mairia Blois, who finished with 12 saves. Freddie Bancroft made eight saves for the Cardinals.
Greenwich had a chance to tie it early in the second half, but Blois stopped Claire Feeney's penalty shot. Garcia then gave Cheshire an insurance goal with 18 minutes remaining.
