The Greenwich football team finished the season with an 8-2 record, a three-game improvement over last year's uncharacteristic 5-5 finish.
But because the Cardinals aren't going to the state playoffs, it wasn't good enough.

"For us, this is not an improvement,"Greenwich coach Rich Albonizio said after Thursday's 31-27 loss to Staples in the FCIAC championship. "This is where we're supposed to be. We're supposed to be playing next week (in the state playoffs)."
Greenwich was seven minutes away from a 13th FCIAC championship, but couldn't hold a 27-17 lead as the Wreckers put together two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.

"We can't cover the pass, let's face it," Albonizio said. "We gave up two many easy yards. Our coverage wasn't tight enough."
The loss knocked the Cardinals out of the Class LL state playoffs as they finished 11th in the final rankings.
Four FCIAC teams got in -- Staples, Norwalk and Ridgefield in Class LL and New Canaan in Class L.
In the class LL quarterfinal matchups, which are set for Tuesday, top seed Xavier (10-0) takes on No. 8 Glastonbury (8-2). No. 2 Staples (9-0) faces No. 7 Ridgefield (8-2), No. 3 Hall (9-1) hosts No. 6 Newtown 8-2) and No. 4 Conard (9-1) is home for No. 5 Norwalk (8-1).
