After escaping with a 41-40 victory over Staples on Monday, theboys basketball team faces the top-ranked squad in the state on Wednesday when it hosts St. Joseph (7 p.m.)

The Cadets are 17-0 overall and 15-0 in the FCIAC after defeating Trinity Catholic on Monday. They feature a bevy of talent, including Timajh Parker, who is headed to Towson University next year, Quincy McKnight, James Jennings and  Patrick Hopkins.

St. Joseph is coached by the ageless Vito Montelli, the winningest high school basketball in New England history who is in his 50th season and has won more than 870 games in his career.

Last season, Montelli, the only coach St. Joseph has ever had, won his 10th state championship, setting an all-time Connecticut record, and the Cadets look like that could another title to the school's resume.

With three games left in the regular season, Greenwich (11-6, 9-6) is tied for sixth in the FCIAC standings with Bridgeport Central, one game ahead of Fairfield Warde, Stamford and Trumbull, who are all at 8-7.

The Cardinals conclude the regular season next week with games at Fairfield Warde and Danbury. Assuming they don't beat St. Joseph, they may need to win both of those to get into the FCIAC playoffs.

Warde (10-7) has been hot, winning five of its last six games, while Danbury has been slumping. After a 7-0 start, the Hatters (9-8, 7-8) have lost eight of their last 10 games.

The Greenwich girls basketball team (4-15, 4-13) concludes its season on Wednesday at St. Joseph ( 7 p.m.), whick like its male counterparts, is headed to the FCIAC playoffs.

Greenwich lost to Staples 50-47 on Monday in a bizarre game as the Cardinals nearly rallied after trailing 19-0 after the first quarter and 30-11 at halftime.St. Joseph (16-3, 14-3) defeated Stamford 54-36 on Monday.
