Greenwich's LJ Mazzilli Named Baseball All-American

University of Connecticut junior second basemanof Greenwich has been named a First Team Preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Mazzilli is coming off a strong sophomore season in which he batted .338 on 93 hits, tied for second most in a single season in program history, in 275 at-bats. He also scored 48 runs and drove in 32, while smacking 23 doubles, the second highest single season mark, and stealing 11 bases.

Last season, Mazzilli was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and was honored as a NEIBA Second Team All-Star. Over the summer, he played for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was also an alternate for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
A year ago, two members of the Connecticut baseball team were named NCBWA Preseason All-Americans as Mike Nemeth and George Springer were each named to the Third Team. At season's end, Springer and Matt Barneswere each chosen as First Team All-Americans, while Kevin Vance was honored on the Second Team.

Mazzilli, the son of former major leaguer Lee Mazzilli, is just one of two players representing the Big East on the NCWBA Preseason All-American roster. Louisville's Justin Amlung was named a Third Team starting pitcher after posting a 2.31 earned run average and a 10-2 record in 2011.
The Huskies' 2012 campaign gets under way in St. Petersburg, Fla., as they take on Indiana in game one of the Big East/Big Ten Challenge on Feb. 17.

Early in the season, the defense of the Ridgefield boys basketball team has been impenetrable, and that again was the case on Tuesday night.
The Tigers allowed just nine points over the final three quarters en route to a 59-16 victory over Greenwich.
Ridgefield, which is yielding only 23.3 points per game, improved to 3-0. Greenwich suffered its first loss and dropped to 2-1.
Kurt Steidl scored 16 points to Ridgefield, which led 15-7 after the first quarter and 26-11 at halftime. Jeff Racy contributed 12 points for the Tigers and Jack Heller added nine.
In the second half, Ridgefield outscored Greenwich by a margin of 33-5.
Sem Kroon paced Greenwich with just six points.

Emily Favorite scored 11 points and Molly Weeks added nine as the Ridgefield girls basketball team defeated Greenwich 43-35 on Tuesday.
The Tigers improved tp 3-2 while the Cardinals fell to 1-4 following their fourth consecutive loss.
Caroline Barrett had 15 points for Greenwich, which kept it close in the first half, only trailing 21-15 at the half. But Ridgefield put away the contest with a 17-10 spurt in the third quarter.
