GYMGUYZ Mobile Gym Comes to Greenwich

The company brings a fitness trainer along with professional workout gear to a client's home.

GREENWICH, CT—A new type of fitness training has come to Greenwich in what is pitched as the best of both worlds when it comes to working out at a gym and at home.

GYMGUYZ brings a fitness trainer along with the professional gear to clients homes.

The company originally started in Long Island and has since expanded to 70 territories in 13 states, including West Hartford and now Greenwich. The goal is to have 195 territories by the end of 2017, including eight others in Connecticut, said GYMGUYZ Founder and CEO Josh York.

GYMGUYZ operates from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the typical workout lasts an hour, but can go longer if a client desires. Different exercise methods are incorporated to get the client the results they want.

“Gone are the days of spending hours on the treadmill or elliptical,” said GYMGUYZ Greenwich franchisee Amber Alagich. “We’re working clients out in a smarter manner to ensure results.”

Alagich and Dave Dequeljoe and are the Greenwich GYMGUYZ franchisees.

Dequeljoe is a former U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat squadron member and served two combat tours in Iraq.

He first got a taste of the wellness industry after sustaining a serious back injury during an air-to-air combat training flight. He was forced to eject during an inverted flat-spin, which is similar to what happened in the movie Top Gun, but in Dequeljoe’s case his plane was upside down.

The incident happened shortly after the September 11 attacks and Dequeljoe didn’t want to sit out the war. He ended up getting back and knee surgery after serving his two combat tours.

“Sitting in the jet for long periods of time during our six hour night missions was excruciating so I started getting physical therapy, massage therapy and training to improve my strength,” he said. “I credit the wellness industry for helping me regain my life again - I was able to play with my kids and live a better and happier life when I thought it would never happen.”

Alagich first got into the wellness industry as a licensed massage therapist in 2003. She eventually switched to a more administrative role and went on to become a multi-unit manager for Massage Envy and then a regional manager. She worked on franchise concepts in New York City and Boston and became active in the Harvard Business School Innovation Lab. She then learned about GYMGUYZ and joining the team was a no-brainer.

“I truly enjoy working with people,” she said. “I enjoy the process of connecting with that other person, learning what their specific needs are, what motivates them.”

The best feeling in the world is being able to help someone become happier and healthier, she said.
