High-End SUV Stolen in Downtown Greenwich

The theft is the ninth reported in four months.

A man who left his car locked at 44 W. Putnam Ave. in central Greenwich discovered it had been stolen Saturday night.

The victim, a Stratford resident, told Greenwich Police his black 2012 Range Rover was parked from about 8:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. March 21, according to police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray. The victim had his car keys. He also reported a set of golf clubs were inside the SUV.

According to Gray, there have been five cars reported stolen in the downtown business district since Christmas. A total of nine vehicle thefts have been reported between Nov. 3 and March 22, Gray said.

On March 8, a Range Rover was reported stolen from outside 64 Greenwich Ave. It was recovered in New York City on March 15, Gray said. In February, and older vehicle was reported stolen from the Riverside train station parking lot, according to Gray. And in early January, a 2006 Ford Freestyle SUV was stolen from the Chickahominy neighborhood and recovered after the suspect crashed the vehicle.

“Motor vehicle thefts continue to happen with at least five in the downtown. Some have been recovered,” Gray said. “People should be cautious — always lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in plain sight.”
