It's Party Time in Greenwich

The Silver Shield Association (SSA) is the union which represents the rank-and-file of the .

But the organization, founded back in the early 1950s to provide benefits not offered at the time to Greenwich Police officers, also is a group that gives back to the community, explains Tom Keegan, a retired GPD lieutenant who organizes the SSA's special events.

Besides the mailers that the SSA sends to town residents each year seeking donations for its community projects, it raises money through various outreach events—just like last weekend's Greenwich Block Party. The SSA then donates the money to programs that benefit town residents.

This year's block party proceeds are to be donated to the 's scholarship program which pays for children to attend summer camps—allowing children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the summer in organized programs, according to Keegan. Previously, block parties have benefited Greenwich police officers suffering from debilitating diseases and their families.
