Major Repair Work To Close Bridge In Greenwich: Timeline, Closures, Impacts
Here's when the $4.5 million project will begin and what motorists can expect.
GREENWICH, CT — The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works on Monday announced that construction will begin this month on the North Street Bridge over West Brothers Brook.
DPW called it "a critical infrastructure project intended to replace an aging bridge structure and improve long-term safety and reliability for the traveling public."
The project is being funded through the Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program (LOTCIP) for construction and inspection, with design funded by the town.

"The Town of Greenwich is proactively replacing a key piece of failing infrastructure to improve safety, reliability, and long-term performance for the community," said Greenwich DPW Commissioner James Michel, in an announcement.
Road Closure, Traffic Impacts, Construction Hours
In order to safely and efficiently complete major phases of the construction work, DPW said North Street will be fully closed between June 8 and Aug. 28, for a maximum of 81 consecutive days.
If the contractor completes the required work earlier, the roadway will reopen ahead of schedule, DPW noted.
Before and after the full closure period, traffic will operate under alternating one-way traffic during construction hours, with Greenwich police on site to assist with traffic control.
Typical construction hours will run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During these hours, alternating one-way traffic may be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
To minimize impacts during peak travel times, no lane closures or alternating one-way traffic will be permitted outside of the full closure period between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, DPW said.
This restriction is intended to reduce disruption during school drop-off, pick-up, and commuter traffic periods.
An official signed detour route will be in place during the full closure and posted in advance.
All dates are weather-dependent and subject to change based on site conditions and construction progress.
Access, Safety, and Detours
"During construction, the town will maintain access and safety to the greatest extent possible," DPW said.
- An official detour route will direct motorists around the closure.
- Emergency vehicles will follow the detour route and will be able to access all private residences without traveling through the construction zone.
- Full access will be maintained at all times to adjacent properties; however, the public will be restricted from entering the active work area.
- There will be no pedestrian or bicycle access across the bridge during the full closure, and users must follow posted detours.
- The full closure is planned to align with the summer school recess. No public transit routes use this roadway.
Construction Activities and Impacts
Residents may observe increased construction activity, including:
- Micropile installation using specialized pile-driving equipment
- Crane placement of precast footings, abutments, and deck units
- Tractor-trailer deliveries of construction materials and equipment
- Micropile installation is less invasive than conventional pile driving, DPW added. However, typical construction noise and vibration should be expected.
No utility service interruptions are anticipated. Water flow within West Brothers Brook will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.
Public Information
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during construction.
Project updates and detour information will be shared on the Town of Greenwich website and DPW communication channels.
