"Americans generate significantly more trash — around 25 percent more — during the holiday season, the majority from gifting and meals. Many of those commonly used items, like ribbons and bows, styrofoam packaging, and sparkly wrapping paper cannot be recycled, and so much food is tossed in the trash instead of donated or composted," explained DesChamps in a news release. "This takes a heavy toll because all this material is incinerated at a cost to public health, our environment and our wallets."
