More People Are Moving Out Of CT Than Moving In, New Report Says

The moving company United Van Lines studied recent moving trends and determined that the Northeast is not faring too well.

To paraphrase a best-seller from a few years back, an awful lot of Connecticut residents are just not that into the state. And unfortunately, more of them are deciding to move out than move in, according to a new report by the moving company United Van Lines.

According to the 2017 United Movers Study, 57 percent of moves in or out of Connecticut were outward. While that number may not be as high as the exodus out of Illinois (63 percent), it is still a number that no state should feel happy about.

"Americans are moving westward, flocking to the Mountain and Pacific West, while the Northeast and Midwest continue to lose residents," the report states. The company has studied state-by-state migration patterns for more than 40 years, focusing on the moves handled by United Van Lines.

Connecticut was ranked fourth in outbound moving, behind Illinois (#1), New Jersey and New York. That exodus from the Northeast, which includes Massachusetts at #6, could even worsen following the recently passed Trump tax plan that caps property and other tax deductions at $10,000.

Vermont is the #1 state people are moving to, but after that the next three states are out West, Oregon (#2), Idaho and Nevada.
