Connecticut Weather: ‘Major Snowstorm, Nor’easter’ Forecast Early Next Week

This weekend's cold but quiet and then things get very interesting as a significant storm is forecast for the state. Here's the latest info.

The storm is currently far away from Connecticut but the National Weather Service and some of the state’s top meteorologists are urging residents to be on alert for the potential of a major Nor’easter that could bring significant snow and possibly some sleet and even rain to the area beginning late Monday and all day on Tuesday.

In a Saturday update, the National Weather Service says the “potential is increasing for a strong coastal storm producing significant snowfall and strong winds Monday Night into TuesdayNight. There is also a low threat for moderate coastal flooding at this time.”

For Hartford and Tolland counties, the weather service writes, “A major storm will likely develop and...may bring heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding to much of southern New England Tuesday into Wednesday. Although this has the potential to be a very potent storm, the severity of impact on southern New England will depend upon the eventual track, which remains uncertain at this time.”

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said in a Saturday update, “No real change on the Tuesday storm. Our models continue to show a major snowstorm... the European ensembles show a 50-70 percent chance of over a foot which is an incredible signal for this far out.”

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Gil Simmons said, “Brutally cold today! Bundle up & good morning!... Yes, big snow & wind still possible all day Tuesday! More details to come. Have a great day!”

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Darren Sweeney writes, “BOTH the American and European models still ON for a major nor'easter on Tuesday into Wednesday. Now, we start fine tuning details both today and tomorrow. Stay tuned!"

As of right now the snow would begin after midnight Monday and continue all day on Tuesday and it doesn’t really wind down until midnight Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Again, the storm is far away from Connecticut, and forecasts can change as it gets closer. But for now the National Weather Service and Connecticut’s meteorologists are treating it very seriously and indicating we could be looking at a major snowstorm early next week.

For this weekend’s weather it's pretty repetitive, it’s cold, temps in the 20s during the day and low teens at night and the wind chill factor makes it feel even more unbearable.

Spring is allegedly right around the corner. Actually, the first day of spring is Monday, March 20.
