New Head Girls Basketball Coach Named At Greenwich High School

The new coach is a former standout basketball player from the University of Connecticut.

GREENWICH, CT — Rashamel Jones, the former University of Connecticut basketball star, has been named as the new girls head basketball coach at Greenwich High School. Jones is replacing Chrys Hernandez, who resigned at the end of last season after many years as head coach of the Cardinals.

According to a news release, Jones has been an assistant basketball coach at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford for the past three seasons. Previously, he has coached AAU programs, given individual or group lessons and organized and supervised basketball camps. Jones has also managed a youth sports facility, while coaching many club and youth teams.

Jones attended Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford, and was named all FCIAC in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He led the Crusaders to an FCIAC championship in 1993. He was named the 1995 Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year.

Jones continued his athletic career at UConn, where he was captain for the Huskies' first ever NCAA National Championship team in 1999. He was also a Big East champion three times. After his collegiate playing days, Jones was offered a contract overseas to play basketball in Europe. He played in the European Basketball League, with stops in England, Italy and Spain.

Jones currently is the director of programming at the Orcutt Boys and Girls Club in Bridgeport. His experiences also includes being a child service worker for the Department of Children and Families and child protective specialist with Administration for Children's Services.

Jones graduated with a bachelor's in sociology from UConn.
