New Special Education Coordinator Named By Greenwich Public Schools

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones this week announced that Eugene Matejek has been named special education coordinator.

Matejek had been serving as the assistant principal at Riverside School since July and will continue to assist Riverside Principal Christopher Weiss during the transition until a replacement is named. The search for the Riverside School assistant principal position will begin immediately.

Matejek will be providing assistance to building administrators, general education staff, and special education staff to increase access to the curriculum for students with disabilities, the school district said in a news release.

He will review and recommend supplemental curriculum materials, evaluate curricular options for non-academic instruction, and promote universal access in the development of curriculum and instructional activities.

In addition, Matejek will plan, coordinate, and provide professional learning for certified and non-certified staff and will be an evaluator for certified special education and related services staff. He will report directly to Chief Officer of Special Education and Student Supports Dr. Stacey Heiligenthaler.

"After an extensive interview process and receiving feedback from the search committee composed of many GPS stakeholders, Mr. Eugene Matejek emerged as the most knowledgeable and experienced candidate for this position," Heiligenthaler said in a news release. "He has tremendous experience as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and special education coordinator that will prove to be a fantastic asset to our special education team."

Matejek has more than two decades of experience as an educator within the Greenwich Public Schools. He began his tenure at GPS in 2001 as a certified teacher at the International School at Dundee, and then transitioned to New Lebanon School as an interventionist and the school’s International Baccalaureate Coordinator.

As an assistant principal at New Lebanon, ISD, and most recently Riverside, Matejek collaborated with building principals on teacher evaluation and professional learning, the implementation of Special Education and 504 plans, and the implementation of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

"I am very excited to take on the role of special education coordinator for the Greenwich Public Schools," Matejek said in a news release. "I feel very fortunate to have had an opportunity to engage in all of the professional experiences throughout my career within GPS, which have prepared me for this position. I am looking forward to continuing to partner with the Special Education and Student Supports administrative team, the building administrators and the school-based teams, and all of the students and families of the Greenwich community."

Matejek holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in teaching from Sacred Heart University. He also earned his Administrative 092 certificate and Sixth Year Degree in Administration from Sacred Heart.
