What better way to cool off in hot July (and August) than with a cup or a cone? Here are some of our favorite local ice cream spots for a summer day.

Longford’s Own Made Ice Cream (146 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich; 203-637-0480; 151 Wilkins Ave., Port Chester; 914-935-9469): This New York and Greenwich chain, established in 1990 by a local Irish family, is hailed by dozens of locals as the best scoop in town for its ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt. We suggest a cup of the “Honey Coffee.”

Carvel (431 Boston Post Rd., Port Chester, N.Y.; 914-937-8880): Carvel makes fun-shaped birthday cakes that are perfect for weekend gatherings. And if you’re in the mood for something a little crunchier, try one of the new “Sundae Dasher” cookie shakes, featuring ice cream combined with Oreo, Nilla Wafers or Nutter Butter cookies. And because July is “National Ice Cream month,” on Monday guests will be able to buy one of these sundaes and get one for free.

Gofer Ice Cream (522 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich; 203-661-9080): Located near the Cos Cob border, this 8-year-old ice cream chain offers regular and soft-serve ice cream and frozen desserts in familiar flavors like “Mocha Chocolate Almond Blitz” and “Maple Walnut” inside a cup or homemade waffle cone. Diet-conscious customers will appreciate the selection of “Gofer Lite” fat-free, no-sugar-added varieties, which include “Cappuccino” and “Spicy Apple Pie.”

Darlene’s Heavenly Desires (185 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich; 203-698-9441): Looking for something out of the ordinary in your summer afternoon treat rotation? Head to Darlene’s for cool, creative confections like the “Original Coney Island Custard,” imported Italian gelato and “Dulce de Leche” crepes.

Doppio Artisan Pizza & Gelato (41 E. Elm Street, Greenwich; 203-340-9470): This Italian eatery’s homemade gelato is the talk of the town in among seasoned sweet tooths. One Patch reader said she had a small taste of hazelnut there that could've prompted a replay of Meg Ryan's infamous deli scene in “When Harry Met Sally.”
