Plans For New Dog Park In Greenwich To Go Before Board Of Selectmen

GREENWICH, CT — Plans for an off-leash dog park at Byram Park are scheduled to go before the Greenwich Board of Selectmen on Thursday as town officials consider sending the project to the Planning and Zoning Commission for review.

The Board of Selectmen meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room, 101 Field Point Road, with remote participation available through Zoom.

The dog park proposal calls for converting approximately 11,000 square feet of parkland at the former Rosenwald property at 1 Ritch Ave. into a fenced area where dogs could run off leash. The project is estimated to cost $30,000, which would be raised privately.

The dog park would feature a water station, signage and park rules, with several existing parking spaces at the main entrance of Byram Park dedicated to the dog park. There would also be pedestrian access.

The $30,000 estimated cost includes $10,000 for fencing and gates, $5,000 for a stone wall repair, $5,000 for a seasonal water connection, $3,200 for site restoration, $1,800 for a pet waste station, $1,000 for signage and a $4,000 contingency.

The Board of Health approved allowing dogs off leash at the proposed location in February 2025, and the Board of Parks and Recreation reviewed the proposal without objection to the location.

The project would still require Planning and Zoning review for Municipal Improvement status, a site plan and parking plan.

The selectmen are also scheduled to give a first read to a proposed ordinance change that would prohibit intentionally feeding fish or wildlife in parks, open space and other town properties managed by the Parks Department unless authorized by the Parks and Recreation director.

Several traffic and parking proposals are returning for second reads, including a proposed increase to annual parking permits, parking restrictions on View Street West and East Putnam Avenue, and on portions of Field Point Road and Shore Road.

The selectmen are also scheduled to give a second read to a request for temporary one-way traffic restrictions on several Old Greenwich roads for a half marathon scheduled on Sept. 27.
