CT Weather: Powerful Nor'easter Expected: Latest Estimates

The National Weather Service has already issued watches in advance of the powerful storm. And yes, some snow is likely too.

It now appears likely that a powerful Nor'easter will have significant impacts on Connecticut Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all of Connecticut. A high wind watch is also in effect for the immediate Connecticut coast.

The storm will bring heavy rain, wind and flooding to Connecticut and later on Friday the precipitation may change to accumulating snow. Flooding will be a real concern and the winds, especially on the coast may be strong enough to produce power outages, the weather service said. We're looking at two to three inches of rain before a possible changeover to snow.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan offered his first crack at how much snow Connecticut may see after the changeover from heavy rain on Friday.

All of Southern Connecticut: From Friday morning through late Friday night. * A deepening coastal low late Thursday night into Friday will bring heavy rain across the area, with the potential for 2 to 3 inches of rainfall. Heavier bands could produce localized higher amounts.

* Smaller rivers and streams across the area will be most vulnerable to the possibility of flooding. In addition, poor drainage urban flooding is possible and may be enhanced by the effects of coastal flooding.

In addition for the immediate Connecticut coast a High Wind Watch is in effect from Friday morning through late Friday night.

"* WINDS...North 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. * TIMING...Friday and Friday night, with the strongest winds from Friday afternoon through Friday evening.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."

Hartford and Tolland counties:

Thursday night into Saturday...

"A significant coastal storm will impact Southern New England with major coastal flooding possible, strong to damaging winds and heavy rain with potential flooding. Rain may mix with or change to snow for a time and may be accompanied by snow accumulations.

From Friday morning through Saturday morning

* A large coastal storm will develop Thursday night and move just offshore of Southern New England Friday and Friday night. This will bring periods of heavy rain to the region.

* Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, locally up to 4 inches possible, will produce significant rises on streams and rivers. Areas of heavy rain may produce urban and small stream flooding, as well as flooding of poor drainage areas.

Litchfield County:

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for portions of northwestern Connecticut.

"* From Friday morning through Saturday morning a large storm will develop off the east coast on Friday. Rain will develop late Thursday night and continue into Friday night, heavy at times. The rain could mix with snow, especially over higher terrain of the southern Taconics and Litchfield Hills, but rainfall totals of around 2 inches are possible.

* Rain will produce significant rises on streams, creeks and rivers. If a persistent band of heavy rain develops over the area some flooding will be possible."
