Recall Issued for Device Used to Deliver Overdose Medication
The devices malfunction and could prevent the drug from being effective, according to a state recall notice.

Teleflex Medical has issued a voluntary recall of its LMA MAD Intranasal Mucosal Atomization device that is commonly used to deliver naloxone to suspected opioid overdose victims.
The devices may not deliver a fully atomized plume of medication and could impair the effects of the drug in emergency situations, according to the state Department of Public Health. The problem is with the delivery device and not the drug itself.
State agencies are working to determine if the recalled device is in circulation with emergency responders across the state.

The recall may result in a shortage to some basic life support EMS organizations, but not paramedic-level organizations. Patients will still receive the correct pre-hospital emergency care.
Naloxone is available to consumers through certified pharmacists at more than 300 pharmacies across the state. Physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses and dentists can prescribe and dispense the medication as well.
