There’s hope for all of the budding gardeners in Greenwich — whether you’ve wondered how to compost or are looking for tips on how to grow herbs or vegetables.
Greenwich Community Gardens will host its first ever Mentor Workshops Day on Saturday, May 16. The workshops, which also include activities for families, begin at 9:45 and and continue until 12:30 p.m. at the Bible Street Community Garden, 129 Bible St. in Cos Cob.
After coffee and treats, a roster of experts from the Greenwich gardening community will offer techniques and tips and answer gardening questions, as well as hands-on composting demonstrations, an herb gardening class.
Workshop schedule:
Ask a Gardener with Coffee Reception, 9:45-10:30. Four specialists share their knowledge and passion on Organic Gardening: Patty Sechi, Master Gardener and Founder of Greenwich Community Gardens, Steven Conaway, Conservation and Outreach director at Greenwich Land Trust, Pam Sloane, Founder of GIVE (Garden Initiatives for Vegetables in Education) and Alan Gorkin, Professional Garden Educator and Horticulturist.
The Herb Garden 10:30-11:30, The timeless and fascinating topic of herbs. Come learn best practices to grow, maintain and use these extraordinary plants. Discussion and live planting demonstration with renowned Herb Specialist and Author, Rosemary Louden.
Composting from Garbage to Gold, 11:30-12:30
Always a popular topic, CT Master Composters Patty Sechi, Jane Kochersperger & Yoko Fujikoro Burke will demonstrate the secrets and science of turning kitchen waste into black gold.
Garden Activities for Children, 9:45- 12:30
CT Master Composter’s Alexandra Moch (Environmental Analyst for the Town of Greenwich), Deanna Novak (Director of Youth Programs at the Garden Education Center) and Cynthia Sherwin (retired Greenwich School teacher and Master Gardener intern) will offer fun and educational compost activities and outdoor crafts for kids of all ages.
Fee is $20 per person - you can choose to attend whatever fits your schedule. Children under 12 are free. Proceeds support Greenwich Community Gardens. This venue is handicapped accessible. Space is limited, so RSVP to: info@greenwichcommunitygardens.org.
Greenwich Community Gardens provides town residents the opportunity to grow their own healthy, organic vegetables, herbs and flowers in two locations, as well as providing Neighbor to Neighbor Food Pantry with hundreds of pounds of fresh local vegetables every year.
