GREENWICH, CT — In an effort to make sure permits get used and to bring the program in line with others in town, the Board of Selectmen has modified the central Greenwich residential and merchant parking permit programs.

Greenwich Police Department Capt. Kraig Gray, who heads up the Parking Services Department, went before the Board of Selectmen on Thursday to ask for the modifications.

"These modifications simply bring the permit process for central Greenwich in line with all the other permitting done by Parking Services," Gray said.

After a unanimous vote from First Selectman Fred Camillo, and Selectpersons Jill Oberlander and Lauren Rabin, permits will now be renewable on an annual basis. A total of 200 permits would be allocated to either central Greenwich residents or merchants, rather than a cap of 100 for each group.

LuAnn Bellantoni, the Business Services Manager for Parking Services, noted that to date since the programs were implemented earlier this year, 21 permits have been issued to residents, and 86 have been issued to merchants.

Permit holders can use any of the 10 long term, 12-hour municipal parking lots throughout the central Greenwich area.

A waitlist will also be maintained if and when the demand exceeds 200 permits.

Currently, the annual cost of these permits, including Connecticut sales tax and a $5 processing fee, is $725. This cost is prorated to the first day of the month in which the permit is issued. Permits are valid thru the remainder of 2021.

The resident and merchant parking programs were developed as part of Parking Services’ long standing goal of trying to steer all-day parkers away from the two-hour parking spaces on Greenwich Avenue, so they can be used for people coming into town to shop or eat.

Gray said the reaction from users has been positive so far since the programs were implemented several months ago.

"The permitting process has been very beneficial to all the users. The merchants are very pleased with the process, and the residents that have participated are also satisified with it. The hope is that there will be 200 users at least in central Greenwich," Gray said.
