Small Earthquake Reported In Greenwich: U.S. Geological Survey

GREENWICH, CT — The loud noise and slight rumble felt throughout Greenwich on Thursday appears to have been caused by a minor earthquake.

According to new data from the U.S. Geological Survey, the 1.4 magnitude earthquake occurred around 12:38 p.m. Thursday 2 kilometers north-northwest of Cos Cob at a depth of 5 kilometers.

The source of the odd noise and rumble was unknown for most of Thursday. Shortly after the event, residents took to social media looking for answers.

Residents reported feeling a tremor from Stamford down to Port Chester. One woman said her house in Glenville shook; another resident in Old Greenwich said they went outside to see if something had fallen on their house.

According to Connecticut's Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, earthquakes are an unusual occurrence in the state, but they have been known to occur, especially in the East Haddam and Plainfield areas.
