Strong Results For Greenwich Boys Track Team At Middletown Meet

The 2018 Middletown Outdoor Track & Field Invitational was held on May 5 in Middletown, CT.

The following Greenwich High School Track Team round up from the 2018 Middletown Outdoor Track & Field Invitational over the weekend is by Coach Jeff Klein:

Competing against over 50 teams from around the state, a small but enthusiastic group of our boys enjoyed an excellent day in Middletown. The combination of near perfect weather and top flight competiton helped propel the group to some outstanding results.

Zane Nye continues to show why he is one of the top freshman sprinters in the state. In the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash, he won his heat and placed 6th overall with a near PB time of 11.44 to qualify into the finals. Nye had a great race in the finals with a PB time of 11.26 to take 4th! Not stopping there, Nye came back later in the meet to run another PB time in the 200 meters coming in 11th with a time of 23.27. Charlie Ducret also had a PB time in the 200 as he ran 23.41 for 15th place.

The 800 meters was a very exciting and close race including our George Karakadas. The field was very close throughout and Karakadas competed very well, running his best race of the season. He ended up in 6th place with a time of 1:58.77, the first time he has broken 2 minutes in an individual 800 meter race.

The 300 meter hurdles was another exciting race as in the fastest heat, Oliver Fulton took the lead in the first 100 meters. He hit a hurdle causing him to lose his rhythm. Despite hitting more hurdles down the stretch, Oliver hung on and eventually earned an 8th place finish in the hurdles running 42.95. Even with the challenges, he was only a second out of first place indicating great upside if he can cleanly clear the hurdles in future races.

The final individual race of the day was also a good one for the Cardinals. The day had been fairly warm for a distance race but by the time the 3200 meters was called, the temperature had cooled off and the sun was down making for nearly ideal racing conditions. The group of GHS runners took advantage of the opportunity, as four of them raced to PB times! Alexander Bein led the way as he, Aidan Brock and Alex Kosyakov passed the 1600 meters in 5:10 on their quest to break 10:20 and qualify for the FCIAC meet. Bein surged over the last 800 meters as he negative splitted the second 1600 running 5:04, for a total time of 10:14, a 17 second PB! Brock also ran the second 1600 faster than the first as he finished in 10:17, a 24 second PB. Akash Molekudy ran a PB of 10:43 while Stephen Burke also had a PB of 10:49.

The last running event of the day was the 4 X 400 relay. Running his first 400 ever, Ducret led off with an excellent 53.7. He as followed by Thomas Pastore who had a PB split of 56.8. Pastore handed off to Karakdas who pulled the team into the lead in their heat with a 53.2 effort. With Fulton banged up from his earlier hurdlling effort, we asked Nye to step in and anchor the relay. Nye gave the team an outstanding effort, holding the lead as he split 52.5 for a huge PB! The team ended up 10th overall as they qualified for the state LL meet.

Owen Bianchi and Anthony Hill represented the team in the field events at the meet. Bianchi jumped 19 feet 2 inches in the long jump. Bianchi and Hill both had season bests in the high jump as they cleared 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 6 inches respectively. In the triple jump, Bianchi qualified for the finals as he finished with a near PB effort of 41 feet 5 inches, good for 8th place overall. Hill tripled 38 feet and quarter of an inch in the event, also close to a PB.

The team looks to keep the momentum going as we face Brien McMahon on Tuesday in our penultimate FCIAC regular season meet. The meet will start at 4 in Norwalk.
