From Tennis to Field Hockey and Basketball, Greenwich Parks & Rec Department Has Fall, Winter Programs

It doesn't matter the age, there are athletic programs offered for fall and winter; Registration is open.

The Greenwich Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for several upcoming fall and winter athletic programs ranging from tennis for tots and indoor field hockey to youth basketball and paddle tennis.

Tennis for Tots

Tennis for Tots will begin classes indoors at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center on Mondays starting Oct. 27 for six weeks ending Dec 1t.

Registration by mail continues through Friday, Oct. 10. In person registration at the Civic Center begins on Monday, Oct. 14 until classes are full.

The program for children 3 and 4 years old will run from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., or 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The 5-, 6- and 7-year old program will be from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., or 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $90 for the 3 and 4 year olds, and $100 for the 5 to 7-year-olds. Tennis rackets will be provided.

Pat Cianciulli who has been the director of the Town’s Tennis Program for five years will teach the program. He also teaches at various private clubs in Greenwich, and has worked at the US Open. He has taken the latest workshops with the USPTR.

Indoor Field Hockey

Indoor Field Hockey Clinics will begin Sunday, Nov. 23, and running for five weeks ending Dec. 21t.

Registration for these Sunday Clinics will begin by mail only starting Monday, Oct. 20 – 24. In person registration will begin on Monday, Oct. 27 until classes are full at the Bendheim Western Civic Center, 449 Pemberwick Rd.

There will be sessions for children 8 to 12 years old. Session 1 will meet from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. for children 8 and 9 years old. Session 2 will be from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. for children 10 to 12 years old. The program will help children develop skills in stick work, passing, receiving, shooting, basic offensive and defensive skills and small sided games.

Caitlin Keane will be teaching this fun instructive class to the players. Caitlin has a tremendous amount of experience playing and coaching field hockey. From 2008 to 2011, she was a Greenwich High School varsity field hockey assistant coach, and in 2012 she coached the GHS Junior Varsity Field Hockey program. She is now the Central Middle School field hockey coach.

Youth Basketball

Registration for youth basketball clinics is open. The clinics will begin at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center on Thursdays starting Nov. 6 for six weeks.

The program for children in kindergarten will run from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Children in first and second grades will meet from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., and third- and fourth-graders meet from 5:15 to 6 p.m. The cost for the program is $100.

Coach John Czarnecki will teach this junior basketball class. He is certified by the State of Connecticut, and has coached for over 25 years. He has coached for the Greenwich Basketball Association, Greenwich Flame travel team, Greenwich Boys and Girls Club, and the Greenwich High School freshman, JV, and Varsity Basketball teams.

The course will be held in the Bendheim Western Civic Center Gym. Registration will begin by mail only until Friday, Oct. 10. In person registration at the Civic Center begins on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Greenwich Paddle Tennis

Registration for paddle tennis membership is now open, by mail only, until Oct. 20. Walk in registration will begin at the Parks and Recreation Office on Monday, Oct. 22.

Residents of Greenwich can purchase a seasonal rental for use of the platform tennis courts located at Loughlin Avenue in Cos Cob. Members may reserve the courts weekly during the season. The courts will be open for member reservations from Nov. 1 until March 28, 2015.
