Update on Proposed Eversource Substation Construction in Greenwich Is Postponed

The utility hasn't completed modifications to its proposal to build a substation in central Greenwich.

The planned update on Eversource’s proposed construction of a new power substation on Railroad Avenue has been cancelled.

The utility, that will be seeking state approval to build the substation on property it owns at 290 Railroad Ave., at the corner of Field Point Road, was scheduled to present an updated plan June 11. The Pet Pantry is currently in the location.

Eversource informed the town on May 19 that it “is making modifications to their proposal as a result of feedback they received from the town and public and will not be ready to present it by June 11th,” according to an announcement issued Wednesday by First Selectman Peter Tesei’s office.

Tesei and other town officials and residents have voiced concern that the design of the proposed substation that would increase the power supply to town is intrusive and not in keeping with the character of the neighborhood.

The new substation will be similar in size to the Cos Cob bulk substation and will be enclosed. The utility also is proposing to lie two underground transmission lines connecting the new substation and the Cos Cob station, although the exact route for the two-mile long lines has not been determined.

The meeting will be rescheduled for later in June, according to Tesei’s office.
