One of my first suggestions to my organizing clients is to purchase a fire proof safe. If you follow my tips of the day you know that it’s something that I definitely recommend for everyone and here is why…
Fire proof safes are not expensive and can just be purchased at your local office supply store (in our case that means Staple’s) and the image with this blog post is my basic recommendation. You can find them by clicking here or on the image and shopping for them at the Staple’s website.

Once you have it home, I suggest that you setup a hanging folder for the following:
- Each member of your household (including pets)
- It should also contain a folder for each car you own and also for any property you own as well as any “toys” (boat, motorcycle, RV, etc.).
- You’d also want to have a folder for appraisals and Invoices for anything of significant value in your home or estate.
When these folders are ready you will find that you can finally have a place for those things that you were never sure what to do with (like passports, wills, etc.). Now, everything belongs in the safe and it can be found easily… the trick however is making sure that what comes out of the safe gets put back as soon as you are done using it… That means that after you get back from your trip to the fashion shows in Paris that you need to remember to put your passport away immediately so that it doesn’t get misplaced. The last thing you want is to have to run around at the last minute the next time you need to get out of the country in a hurry… just put the passports back and you won’t have to worry about them again!

This is also one of the things you would want to grab and go heaven forbid there is an emergency. My basic rule with how to think about what you want in the safe is: what do you need in order to rebuild your life if disaster strikes? Passports, birth certificates, copies of credit cards, etc. are all the very basic necessities should something happen & you need to get out of your home in an emergency.

When was the last time you had to head out of the country in a hurry? Sadly my life isn’t nearly that exciting but should you need someone to accompany you to the Caribbean sometime, give me a shout, I know exactly where my passport is!
Where is your passport?
