Woman Who Fell Overboard From Sailboat Rescued By Police: Greenwich PD

The Greenwich Police Department Marine Section responded to a report of a woman who fell overboard in Long Island Sound on Sept. 14.

GREENWICH, CT — The Geenwich Police Department's Marine Section rescued a woman who fell overboard from a sailboat on Long Island Sound over the weekend, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

Marine officers on Saturday at approximately 7:47 p.m. responded off the shore of the Belle Haven Yacht Club on a report of a woman who fell overboard and into the water. It was reported that she was holding onto a buoy and could not get back onto the sailboat she was previously on, police said in a news release.

Officers Joseph Turcsanyi and Andrew Greco respnded to the area in Greenwich Police Boat No. 139, the GPD said, noting it was after sunset and very dark on the water.

As they approached, they noticed a man within the boat who said that his friend fell into the water and was holding onto a mooring, according to police.

Turcsanyi directed the police boat toward the mooring and stopped a few feet away where he noticed a woman who was clinging onto the mooring to avoid drowning, police said. The officers threw her a life ring and she was pulled onto the police boat.

Police said the woman appeared "very tired and weak," and she told officers she had been in the water holding onto the mooring for approximately 15 minutes. The woman had lost her balance which caused her to fall overboard, police said.

The man tried to wave down other boaters, but no one stopped, prompting him to call police, the GPD said.

Police said the woman asked to re-board the sailboat, and the two vessels then went back to shore and docked without incident.

There were no injuries reported and no medical aid was requested, according to police.
