21-Gun Salute To Honor President Carter At Groton Sub Base

GROTON, CT — Naval Submarine Base New London will conduct a 21-gun salute Thursday at noon as part of a National Day of Mourning in honor of the passing of President Jimmy Carter.

The ceremony may be audible to area residents. Police departments in Montville, Groton, and Ledyard have released statements about the ceremony.

The salute will consist of 21 separate single volleys fired at one minute intervals, and there is no cause for alarm, according to the Ledyard Police Department.

The salute will take place at the Submarine Force Museum and Historic Ship Nautilus on Nautilus Pier.

The Submarine Force Museum will be closed for the National Day of Mourning, and the event is not open to members of the general public. It can be observed from Nautilus Overlook Park on Military Highway in Groton, according to Town of Groton police.
