Angry Words As $5.2 Million Education Budget Cut Rankles Residents, Officials: Report
One school is slated to be closed as a result of the cut.

GROTON, CT — The planned cut of $5.2 million to Groton's education budget for 2017-18 continues to send shock waves through the district, and parents and school officials voiced their displeasure during a joint Board of Education and Town Council meeting Wednesday, reports The Day.
Dozens of school district employees are facing layoffs, an elementary school will be closed, initiatives will be eliminated, and the sports program will be drastically changed, according to Superintendent Michael Graner, who angrily dared councilors to vote again on the cut.
The district had sought $77.7 million for next year, but will now have to make do with $72.5 million as a result of the cut.

While parents and school officials say the cut will devastate the educational system and hurt children, councilors stressed that without the cut, taxes would spiral out of control and people may lose their homes as a result.
