'Captain T.A. Scott: Legendary Master Diver and Wrecker' Lecture Coming to Noank

Pierce Rafferty, director of Fishers Island's Henry L. Ferguson Museum, lectures on the extraordinary career of Captain T.A. Scott.

Pierce Rafferty, director of Fishers Island’s Henry L. Ferguson Museum, will present an illustrated lecture that chronicles the extraordinary career of Captain T.A. Scott—both as an underwater contractor and as a salvager of countless wrecked ships in our region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Captain Scott first moved to New London in the early 1870s to supervise the construction of a lighthouse atop a submerged ledge off of Fishers Island, NY. After the completion of Race Rock Lighthouse, a remarkable construction feat that brought him national attention and celebrity, Capt. Scott soon established a thriving business as a “wrecker” or salvager of stricken vessels. Following his death in 1907, the T.A. Scott Co. merged with its competition and evolved into a national construction conglomerate.
