Case of Groton Sailor's Illegal Photos Under Review by President Trump

Trump said in a recent interview that he is reviewing the case and finds the situation "very unfair."

GROTON, CT - The case of a Navy sailor who allegedly took illegal photographs of classified areas in a submarine is currently being reviewed by President Trump, according to media reports.

Kristian Saucier was advised by the President's national security advisor to seek a pardon, according to the Norwich Bulletin. Trump had said in a recent interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he is reviewing the case and finds the situation “very unfair.”

The suspect had plead guilty last year to taking unauthorized photographs aboard a submarine in 2009, according to News 8. He further plead for leniency, citing that his prosecution was driven by sensitivity to leaking classified information in light of the Hillary Clinton email scandal.

Saucier said he took the pictures mainly because he wanted mementos of his time as a sailor, News 8 reported. Prosecutors argued differently, claiming Saucier was a disgruntled sailor who put national security at risk by taking the photos.

The suspect is also accused of destroying a laptop and camera in order to hinder investigations into the alleged photographs, the Norwich Bulletin reported. Any connection to the Clinton scandal was also shot down by prosecutors.
