Crown Molding Installation With A Shelf

A Nice Touch For A Bland Room

Putting up decorative molding in a room enhances its appeal and adds architectural interest.  Here are some tips on  putting it up.

Level Line

The first step is to make a level line about 12” from the ceiling around the perimeter of the room.  Next, find the wall studs which can be found on either side of the window and door openings and in each corner.  Then drive a finish nail along the level line until you hit another stud.  At that point, the studs will usually be 16” apart.  You can also use a stud finder that can be purchased at a hardware store.

Support Wood

Next, screw the support wood (see diagram #1) along the level line into the wall stud on all four walls.  This will hold the 1” x 6” pine shelf on top of it and also provides nailing for the crown molding.

Crown Molding

, I explained how to cut the crown molding.  Install the 4 ½” crown molding (see diagram #2) under the shelf and to the wall.  Putty and caulk all the nail holes in the trim.

Paint

You can paint the ceiling and the walls above the newly installed shelf.  The shelf and crown molding are usually painted the same as the window and door trim and the rest of the walls can be painted whatever color you choose.
