Don't Be Duped: Police Issue Alert On Latest Scam

The insidious scam calls get worse. This time, the caller says they're with Social Security and warn the resident they're a ID theft victim.

GROTON, CT — If you get a call from someone saying they're with Social Security Administration, and you're not expecting a call from the federal agency, hang up and then report it to police.

Police took to Facebook to alert residents about the scam.

Groton Police have gotten calls from residents who have been targeted in a scam where a caller claims to be from the Social Security Administration.

The scam goes like this:

"The victim receives a call from an agent saying they work for the Social Security Administration. The agent will then tell the victim their Social Security number was used fraudulently in another state. The victim is then prompted to press 1 to speak with an officer. The victim is then asked to confirm their name and full Social Security number, thereby giving the scammer their private information," police explained.

Police say "do not give your personal information out to anyone over the phone. If you have questions or experience a similar scam, please contact your local police department."
