Electric Boat To Hire 8K Workers This Year, Next Year: Report

The submarine manufacturing giant is expected to accelerate hiring during a period of "unprecedented growth," according to reports.

GROTON, CT — General Dynamics Electric Boat plans to hire 8,000 workers this year and next year, according to The Day of New London.

This year's hires include 2,250 employees at the Groton shipyard for assembly and testing; 3,250 at its Quonset Point, RI, manufacturing facility; 1,000 at engineering-and-design offices in New London; and another 1,500 in support roles at Groton and Quonset Point, according to Hearst Connecticut Media.

The news came during Electric Boat President Mark Rayha's comments at a legislative briefing and breakfast at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton. Rayha said the country is in "a period of unprecedented growth and demand for submarines."

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney recently announced that a $15.4 billion contract modification has been awarded to Electric Boat.

“This contract will support Electric Boat’s advanced construction and procurement of long-lead items for the third Columbia-class submarine, the USS Groton (SSBN 828), as well as development and engineering work for future Columbia submarines as the lead shipyard for the Columbia-class,” Courtney said in a statement.

Electric Boat is also expanding its footprint as the company purchased the Crystal Mall property in Waterford. It's anticipated that mall operations will cease at the end of the month.
