THE ROCKETS' RED GLARE : THE WAR OF 1812 AND CONNECTICUT

The Bill Memorial Library, 240 Monument Street in the City
of Groton, will host  “The Rockets’ Red Glare; the War of 1812 and Connecticut”,  on Wednesday January 23 at 6:30pm at the Library. Jointly sponsored by the library and the Friends of Fort Griswold, Groton Historic Society, and the Avery-Copp Museum, the program will be presented by
Glenn Gordonier. Dr. Gordonier is the primary author of a book with the same title that was published this year by the New London County Historical Society.  It was written to accompany an exhibit that is currently on view at the Lyman Allyn Museum. The event is free and open to the
public. Refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase.

Gordinier is Mystic Seaport’s Robert G. Albion Historian. He teaches history for the University of Connecticut and the Williams College/Mystic Seaport Program in Maritime Studies. A museum professional since 1979, Gordinier
directed Mystic Seaport’s living history program for ten years and has worked with mixed media, television and live sea music performances. His characterization of Josiah Gardener has been seen across the United States, in
Canada, Australia and Europe. Gordinier earned his master’s degree in American history at Lehigh University and his doctorate at the University of Connecticut. He has presented formal papers and served as keynote speaker at conferences in the United States and abroad. He has also advised for Colonial Williamsburg, the National Park Service and the Australian National Maritime Museum, and
published numerous works including: Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Power in Maritime America, 2008 and Fishing Out of Stonington, 2004.

The Bill Memorial Library is located in Historic Groton Bank, adjacent to Fort Griswold and the Groton Monument. Hours are Monday and Thursday 10-9, Tuesday and Wednesday 10-5, and Saturday 10-3.
