“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" Speech has inspired generations of Americans to dream of a better future, even when those dreams seem impossible. The Town of Groton is thrilled to celebrate this seminal speech in a year where we all are looking towards the future and dreaming of a better tomorrow. I can't wait for Groton to see the spectacular lineup of speakers and performers the Town has assembled.”, said Juan Melendez, Groton DEI Committee Member/“I HAVE A DREAM 2020” Event Chair.

In recognition of the 58th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s iconic speech, the event is a showcase of the dynamic local voices honoring Dr. King’s legacy through various genres such as poetry, song, and sermon. The event carries particular significance this year given today's social climate. Attendance is limited and therefore registration is required. COVID-19 social distancing practices will be implemented and masks are mandatory.

“I’m excited for what will be the first of many events organized by the Town’s DEI Committee. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech is a fitting first event. I call on all of our citizens to recognize and celebrate his legacy.

Over the last several months I’ve seen the DEI Committee grow from a few committed Town staff members focused on increasing workplace diversity to now having over forty members from many partner organizations, all committed to societal change.”, said John Burt, Groton Town Manager.

The DEI Committee celebrates the uniqueness of each individual in our community, believes that developing cross-cultural empathy is vital to Groton’s future, and is dedicated to creating and maintaining an environment that welcomes and celebrates Groton’s diversity.
